Mr. Maina's Students We are a hybrid community based schools known as Value Added Academy. We are based in a rural part of Kenya called Kikuyu, but not far from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, about 21km. The school was started in 2001 by Charles Maina and 5 other colleagues, and runs from Nursery to 4th Grade, and the number continues to increase. We hope to add Grade 5 next year and so on. The students range from 3-5 year for nursery and 6-11 for the Grades. They come from poor backgrounds; orphans and vulnerable children; victims of internal displacement; as well as children from well up families on the other hand. It has both boys and girls. We learn English, Mathematics and other subjects. We do not have a website of our own but a wikispace, courtesy of Terry's recent assistance. We hope you all understand that Africa lies quite a bit behind in technology, but we shall try as much as possible to keep abreast with activities amongst us all. Our Motto is: Every child deserves the best. This is our first time to participate in the Monster Project and its quite exciting. We shall design finger and rings. You can always do a mail to us. |

We are the Year 6 children at St.
Oswald's Primary School in Burneside near Kendal in the Lake District
of England. We live in a small and busy village in a beautiful part of our
country. This area is visited by lots of tourists from all around the world. The
Lakes are famous for being the home of the poet William Wordsworth and the
children's author Beatrix Potter. Check us
out on Google Earth and you'll see what we mean. The Year 6 children help run
our school website at www.st-oswalds.cumbria.sch.uk
. We help to maintain the website in our spare time with our teacher, so there
are still a few gaps, but we are working on them ! Class 5 are working very hard
this year at developing links with lots of schools from around the globe and we
are setting up e-mail links with children from America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
We are looking forward to making our first international monster and we wish
good luck to everyone who is involved.

| Hi Monster Makers, We are 39 first graders from Elmwood Franklin School in Buffalo, New York. There are two first grades in our school....Ms. Gardon and Mrs. Jurnack's classes. There are 363 students in our school and we are located near the Buffalo Zoo in North Buffalo. We have gym everyday and a great playground. We work hard, but play hard too. Our teachers have been making monsters for many years. We are excited to be designing the wings! Your Friends, Ms. Gardon and Mrs. Jurnack's First Graders |
About Buffalo: Here are some things you might find interesting about Buffalo, New York. We are located on
Lake Erie. The mighty Niagara River heads to Niagara Falls from Buffalo. It is only about a 35 minute drive to the beautiful Falls. We are also very close to Fort Erie, Canada. Many people visit Canada often by traveling over
The Peace Bridge. We have a beautiful Art Gallery, The Albright Knox Art
Gallery, a great zoo, a science museum, historical museum and botanical gardens. Buffalo has many theatres and even a children's theatre. Most people know that Buffalo is famous for chicken wings, but pizza and all kinds of ethnic foods and festivals make this area a delicious, (sometimes fattening) place to live. People in Buffalo love sports. We have the
Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and a minor league baseball team, the Buffalo
Bisons. There are many universities and colleges in
Buffalo; the University of Buffalo is probably the best known. There is lots of music in Buffalo. We have an excellent orchestra and lots of little music clubs. Buffalo has lovely architecture. It was a wealthy city in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We have a Frank Lloyd Wright house, which is a popular destination for tourists. On the down side, many factories have closed in Buffalo and the population has decreased. Finding good jobs can be challenging. Buffalo has a reputation for lots of snow and we do get the occasional
HUGE snowstorm, but for the most part the snow belt is south of the city where there are ski resorts. We have four beautiful seasons, although I must admit that winter can be awfully
long. I hope this helps you and your students know our town a little better. It really is a great place to live...it's a small big town. We have all been very saddened by the death of our local cheerleader, national
newscaster....Tim Russert. He was truly one of our finest.
Sincerely, Rose
Connecticut

We live in Hannibal, MO. It is the home of Mark Twain and this past summer lots of flooding. It is a great place to live.
